Position: Mottled Duskywing Field Assistant (x 5)
Project: Native Pollinator Initiative
Location: Pinery Provincial Park, Ontario
Type of position: Full-time (37.5 hours /week)
Duration: 3 positions x 16 weeks (May 8– August 25, 2023);
2 positions x 7 weeks (July 17 – September 1, 2023)
Rate of pay: $17-$19/hr commensurate with experience, plus 4% vacation pay; field
accommodation provided
Hours of work: Flexible to suit project needs and weather conditions.
Working some weekends will be required.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In Ontario, the Mottled Duskywing is listed as Endangered, a status which was precipitated by
historical loss and fragmentation of oak savanna habitat and other human induced pressures. The
Ontario Butterfly Species at Risk Recovery Team have been working on plans to reintroduce
Mottled Duskywing to formally occupied locations since 2017. Pinery Provincial Park was chosen as the first location for reintroduction because of the quality and extent of suitable habitat present, the park’s protected status, and the dedication of Ontario Parks to maintaining the oak savanna habitats within the park. We are seeking enthusiastic, up-and-coming field ecologists to join our 2023 field team to monitor introduced Mottled Duskywing in the park. Accommodation provided on site.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Assistants will work closely with Dr. Ryan Norris (University of Guelph) and biologists at Wildlife
Preservation Canada and Natural Resource Solutions Inc. to conduct releases and post-release
monitoring of captive-reared Mottled Duskywing, butterfly mark-resighting and vegetation
surveys.

Specific duties will include:
• Assist in releases of captively reared Mottled Duskywing
• Provide temporary care of captive-reared pupae and newly emerged butterflies on-site
• Assist in daily mark-resighting, larvae, and oviposition surveys in rare oak savanna habitats
• Record data efficiently and accurately in the field
• Data entry and management
• Communicate with project partners in an effective, prompt, clear, and professional manner
• Assist with season summary report
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• A strong interest in butterfly ecology, entomology, and/or conservation
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision; recognizes when clarification of
correct procedures is necessary
• Demonstrated flexibility to meet project needs
• Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work, including data collection
• Excellent work ethic, dependable and positive attitude are essential
• An affinity for being outdoors and working well within groups
• Physically fit and able to endure hiking outside in rough terrains, variable weather conditions, and with exposure to biting and stinging insects, and poison ivy.
• Personable, with good communication skills, a positive attitude, and highly self-motivated
ASSET SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Plant and butterfly identification skills, Ontario species especially
• Enrolled in, or possessing a background from, an applicable college or university program (e.g., biology, ecology, environmental science, wildlife biology, zoology, or other similar disciplines)
• Proven comfort handling insects, including butterflies, in a field setting
• Experience conducting biological surveys and working with species-at-risk
• Valid First Aid and CPR certification

Position: Regional Field Biologist - Sudbury
Project: Native Pollinator Initiative
Location: Sudbury region, will require some overnight travel
Type of position: Full-time (37.5 hours /week)
Duration: Temporary position (8 weeks), with opportunity of additional 8-week contract with Junction Creek Stewardship Committee (see below)
Anticipated start: May 1st, 2023
Rate of pay: $20/hour, plus 4% vacation pay
Hours of work: Flexible to suit project needs and weather conditions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Wildlife Preservation Canada’s (WPC) Native Pollinator Initiative is looking to hire a Regional Field Biologist to assist with the implementation of activities related to their Native Pollinator Initiative within the Sudbury region. This multifaceted program combines expert research, annual large-scale population monitoring, conservation breeding, community science, and education and outreach to conserve at-risk bumble bees in Canada. This position will be assisting mainly with the bumble bee population monitoring and collection efforts to support our conservation breeding program but may also assist with education and outreach.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Regional Field Biologist will be responsible for coordinating and conducting frequent road-side and on-site bumble bee surveys at multiple locations on public and private properties within their assigned region. Reporting to the Lead Biologist, the Regional Biologist will work with and provide direct supervision and ongoing training to a regional Technician. Training on all tasks will be provided, especially bumble bee surveying and identification. This position offers a unique opportunity for hands-on work with at-risk and declining pollinator species. The Biologist will be primarily responsible for field work, data collection, and data entry but will also assist with other tasks related to research and recovery efforts for declining bumble bees.
Specific duties will include:
• Lead and coordinate spring wild bee population surveys and/or collections at many sites within either the Sudbury region
• Supervise a Technician while conducting field work and related tasks
• Facilitate ongoing transfers of caught queens to WPC’s Bumble Bee Breeding Lab
• Maintain detailed records and ensure all field data entry
• Participate in other Native Pollinator Initiative program activities as required, including basic data analysis, and science communication

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
• Possess a basic understanding of pollinator biology, conservation, and ecology
• Leadership skills, including supervising and/or training others
• Strong interest in ecological field research, including species at risk issues
• Experience conducting insect population surveys
• Insect and plant identification skills
• Ability to work both in a team and independently. Recognizes when clarification of correct procedures is necessary
• Detail-oriented and able to accurately enter and data
• Willing and able to travel long distances across the Sudbury region by car
• A valid Ontario driver’s licence (G-class) and access to your own vehicle. Mileage will be compensated for any field work at $0.51/km
• Physically fit and able to endure hiking outside in rough terrains, variable weather conditions, and with exposure to biting and stinging insects.
• Personable, with good communication skills, a positive attitude, and highly self-motivated
• Able and willing to work long hours (up to 12 hours/day), including some evenings and weekends
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

POSITION: Lab Manager at the Cariveau Native Bee Lab

Dates: Start as soon as possible. Position is 1 year with opportunities for extension.

Location: Primary location will be Saint Paul, MN where the Cariveau Native Bee Lab is located. Fieldwork during the spring and summer may be included, which would be in various locations, such as rural Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Housing is not included except during fieldwork trips.

Responsibilities: Responsibilities will vary. Much of this position will focus on data and lab management. Data tasks include managing large data sets, data cleaning, creating and checking metadata and preliminary analysis. Also, the lab manager will assist with specimen management in collaboration with the University of Minnesota insect collection. General lab management tasks include ordering/inventory of supplies and equipment, hiring/supervising technicians and undergraduate students, organizing the lab space, coordinating communication with lab members, and assisting with budgeting. In the spring and summer, the lab manager will conduct fieldwork for various projects. This position requires attention to detail and supervisory skills. Applicants must be able to work highly independently, but group work is also required.

Required Qualifications:
-Valid US driver’s license and legally able to work in the US
-B.S. in Entomology, Environmental Science, Botany, Conservation Biology, Ecology, a related field or a combination of related education and work experience to equal four years
-Experience managing and cleaning ecological data
-Experience with insect and plant identification
-Experience with one of the following: leading a field crew, supervising, teaching, or several fieldwork experiences
-Advanced communication skills with supervisors, small teams, students, and collaborators
-Dependability, punctuality, and ability to complete high quality work with minimal supervision
-Experience using or managing large scale datasets
-Introductory skills in R or Excel
-Flexibility and adaptability

Preferred Qualifications:
-Understanding of basic bee biology with experience handling, collecting, or identifying native bees
-Previous work experience managing a lab environment
-Working with or managing insect collections
-Experience working in R to clean and document data with packages such as dplyr, tidyr, etc.
-Knowledge or experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, Microsoft Access, or SQL)
-Knowledge of basic statistics
